MEMS-based multi-sensor integration for autonomous robotics applications

Abstract: This research explores the integration of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS)-based sensors within a multi-sensor fusion framework to enhance the perception, navigation, and control capabilities of autonomous robotic systems. The study addresses a key challenge in robotics—achieving high-precision localization and situational awareness under dynamic and uncertain environmental conditions while maintaining compactness and energy efficiency. The proposed MEMS-based Multi-Sensor Integration (MMSI) system combines data from inertial, visual, magnetic, and LiDAR sensors using an adaptive Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and smoothing techniques. Experimental validation was conducted on a prototype robotic platform equipped with multiple MEMS sensors and tested under varied indoor and outdoor conditions. The results demonstrated that the MMSI system significantly reduced positional root mean square error (RMSE) and drift rates compared to conventional single-sensor and loosely coupled fusion systems. Orientation accuracy improved by up to 40%, while computational latency was reduced by 24% without a significant increase in power consumption. Statistical analysis confirmed that these improvements were highly significant across trials. The findings affirm that tightly coupled MEMS-based multi-sensor fusion enables accurate, robust, and energy-efficient navigation suitable for autonomous ground and aerial robots. The research further proposes practical recommendations for implementing MEMS-integrated architectures, focusing on calibration optimization, adaptive filtering, and modular sensor design. Overall, the study contributes a validated methodological framework that enhances autonomy and precision in robotics through micro-sensor synergy and advanced data fusion algorithms.
